March 2012: A preliminary meeting was held with Shechen Monastery, Aruna Raim – Managing Director of the Clinic, Dr Deepeara Sharma – Medical Director and Manoj – Public Liaison, Sangye, (KOPAN), Keshab (NAHOH) and lew (HearingNEPAL Program) to discuss a new clinic at Shechen Monastery, near Bouda.
Keshab and Sangye will follow up, after they consider our offer to run a clinic 2 days a month (Primary ear care and hearing assessment with ENT referral or rehabilitation using hearing devices.)
We have offered to check all the school children after May when equipment generously donated by Australian clinics will be refurbished and calibrated with the support of the Whitsunday Lions Club and Bozzy and Doug from GN Otometrics.

Beneficiaries: Shechen Clinic is open to the public, mostly servicing disadvantaged clients. The Clinic already has a structured fee system, so that no-one in need is denied treatment.
Primary Ear Camp 1 – August 2012
Staff: Keshab Dangol, CMA (NAHOH)
Objectives:
- To provide primary ear care and referral to ENT where required.
- To provide a quality hearing assessment service
- To establish the need for a hearing aid/ rehabilitation service
- To commence a hearing aid fitting service, administered by Shechen Clinic, with support from HNP
- To train Hospital clinicians in Primary Ear Care and basic audiometric screening.
Outcomes:
- As of August 2012, NAHOH has been invited to hold weekly primary ear care clinics at Shechen. Two clinics have been held, initially offering services to the monastic community from Shechen Monastery.
- Primary Ear Care Examinations: Around 90 monks have been examined, of approximately 400 in the monastery.
- Perforated TMs requiring surgery : 7
- A waiting list of patients requiring hearing aid fitting is being compiled (2 patients so far)
Future Aims:
- Development of a regular, complete ear and hearing service at Shechen Clinic is the ultimate aim, with the current weekly clinics demonstrating NAHOH’s skills and competence, and the findings demonstrating the level of need for such a service.
- Identify clinic staff with the interest and aptitude to be trained for involvement in the Program.
Primary Ear Camp 2 – Teku Slum – Kathmandu October 2012

Objectives:
As part of our arrangement with Shechen Clinic, we run a camp in the surrounding slums once a month. Anyone requiring further treatment or referral is then sent to NAHOH’s clinic in Kirtipur, where medical follow up is completed, hearing aids fitted or inclusion in free surgery camps is organised.
